If you want to learn something useful and learn it well, think logically. You know you will get the best training by going to a professional in the field with real qualifications and real experience.
So where should you get self defence training from? You learn best from a professional with real life experience and the qualifications to teach. Don't intrust learning life saving skills from someone who treats self defence tuition as a hobby.
- Would you learn to drive from an instructor with no driving experience?
- Could you learn to fly from an pilot who has only been in a simulator?
So where should you get self defence training from? You learn best from a professional with real life experience and the qualifications to teach. Don't intrust learning life saving skills from someone who treats self defence tuition as a hobby.
The instructor:
Your club instructor (me) is the only Krav Maga Instructor in the region who has passed the high standard of the BKMA. I am also an experienced Bodyguard, qualified to the internationally recognised standard in close protection that the UK governing authority (the SIA) demands. I am experienced in the real world application of self defence. Of course, also highly trained in the Krav Maga system, reaching instructor level in 2011, and I regularly receive update training and attend seminars and workshops across Europe with various other organisations and Martial Art styles to gather information on techniques and training methods.
The style:
The number one reason people train in a martial art is for self defence, and the second reason is fitness. These are cornerstones of Krav Maga... it focuses on real life and survival of violence as well as gaining and maintaining the strength and endurance to get through a situation.
Value for money:
It is a strong principle of the club to provide training to as many people as possible, and part of this goal is to keep costs to you as low as possible. We do not make you buy branded clothing or equipment, and we don't force you to grade or attend specialist seminars to learn certain techniques. We simply offer you quality training at an affordable price. We do not force you into long term automatically renewed contracts, but what we do offer you is simple benefits that will improve your life, and this is Krav Maga Training and the option for discounted membership to a well equipped gym.
Honesty:
The club has a strong focus on realism, and hence will inform you the truth of violence and subjects like fear in such situations. From the outset you must know that you need to be prepared to work hard, because if it comes to it in real life you will need to be prepared to fight for your life. Also, we are completely open and transparent with regards to our qualifications and experience, in fact it is something to be proud of. There are other systems, there are other clubs with instructors who attend a weekend bootcamp and claim they are "qualified Bodyguard instructors", the truth is you can't be a good instructor in something you have no experience of.
The students:
The students are the life blood of the club! When joining the club you instantly make new friends with at least one common interest (Krav Maga). We have social events to build strong friendships. Every student is casually interviewed by the instructor as it´s important to only pass on these skills to those who we can trust not to abuse them. The club attracts people from many nationalities, backgrounds and experiences. Stavanger and Sandnes are diverse cities, and our club reflects that.
Training methods:
With Krav Maga Online and at the Krav Maga club of Stavanger and Sandnes you will train in core skills of effective self defence. One of the fundamental principles of effective training is "repetition". You need to take your new Krav Maga core skills and make them part of your muscle memory so as to minimise your reaction time in an attack. But often you wont even realise what skills you are developing... the training techniques, drills, and games are all planned in advance and done in such a way that you learn without overthinking. All the advanced Krav Maga skills that you will learn come from a solid base of core skills. On day one you will learn the basics and be shown variations that develop from it. Have strong core skills, and the connections to the advanced techniques will come easy to you.
The competition comparison:
Of course there are other training clubs in the region. But be careful and be sure you are learning towards your goals. For example, know the difference between the martial arts, some are for sport, some are for tradition and some are reality based. (Krav Maga is a reality based system for self defence). You should research the instructor and style history. There is a training club in Stavanger where the instructor took no formal training and simply paid a $99 fee to received a DVD which is used to teach a self defence system... shocking but true. And another who did a weekend course and believes this to be the ultimate certified teacher/training course.
Always ask about your instructor´s background and their level/position within their organisation. You don't want to get taught by anyone of middle rank, find someone who has extensive training and experience. Also, understand that "certified" does not mean "qualified". You may find that your are being taught by an amateur with a hobby. You know your life is worth more, don't take the risk, learn from a professional.
Comparing to online training, there has been a surge of instructors following the same recipe of creating video content for sale and re-sale. This is similar to purchasing a DVD or viewing YouTube clips. The difference to my Krav Maga Online training is that I am a live instructor, there to teach and provide you with instant feedback for improvement and perfection in techniques.
